The importance of in-building communications
was magnified during the New York City Fire Department
(FDNY) response to the World Trade Center terrorist attack.
During that and other emergencies in high-rise buildings
throughout New York City, New York, firefighters have
not had reliable in-building wireless communications.
This problem is occurring in many parts of the country
and threatens the lives of public safety officials and
inhibits their ability to perform their missions.
To help resolve this problem, many localities have
passed ordinances or other laws that require building
owners to provide access to the public safety wireless
networks inside their buildings.
